Mathematics is a key element in any career. Understanding how to problem solve and critically think are essential in any career and mathematics helps strongly develop those fundamental abilities. These skills are the foundation of the analytical thinking that occur when analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. I have complimented my mathematics degree with a minor in business administration and management which will allow me to make statistically informed decisions that will positively impact the companies I work for on a day to day basis.
Being a math major has equipped me with the necessary experience to logically comprehend a problem and solve it using various mathematics. Having a business background has honed in on my communication, leadership, and organization skills needed in a professional setting. Studying mathematics in college is advantageous due to the wide variety of topics that are applied across countless fields. Having experience with various software has assisted me in improving the efficiency and accuracy of my decision making through technology. Microsoft Excel, Mathematica and LaTeX have allowed me to not only analyze data but present it to others in an understandable and organized manner. While Mathematica can evaluate complex functions, Microsoft Excel can quickly arrange and summarize data. With the ability to create arrays, tables, and charts, LaTeX uses the data comped b he o ofare and dipla he finding in a way that is comprehendible to any audience.
The ability to think analytically and use data to solve problems are two of my strongest skills. In every company, an analyst is necessary to make informed decisions. My quantitative background has enhanced my ability to look at problems from a different viewpoint that others may not. Applying my unique ability to apply mathematics to business will make me a valuable asset. There are many complex concepts and ideas that my mathematical background allows me to solve from a unique point of view.
Finance is a large industry in which math and business combine and this is where I plan to utilize my diverse skillset. In the field of finance, using my ability to present I have been able to effectively communicate during presentations. These abilities were integral in my coursework and vital when working with others. Communication and effective teamwork techniques are directly related and critical in the fields of mathematics and business. Being able to cooperate with others effectively is necessary in any setting. In a marketing course, I enhanced this ability as we consistently collaborated on assignments in random groups. This forced us to learn how to handle various situations such as conflicting answers. Being able to work through disagreements has allowed me to become a stronger communicator.
My courses have taught me how to think in a more proficient and effective way. As a math major, I approach problems logically and from multiple viewpoints. Between my quantitative skills, organization, communication skills, and problem solving skills, I am able to apply mathematical thinking to real world problems.
